I think it's accurate to say that's how you "become a part of fandom" now. Five years ago it wasn't, and I don't think it's a change for the better. People are correct in saying Tumblr does not foster a sense of community, and it also doesn't engender itself well to any kind of discussion beyond a few lines.

it does not foster a sense of community FOR YOU. it does not lend well to discussion FOR YOU. and that is fine, everyone is different.

i know f!s hates tumblr but this engrained idea that it is terrible and ruining fandom needs to be dialed back a bit. there are plenty of people who feel very strongly that they belong through tumblr. i have seen, and been part of, discussions. there are people that miss the old ways of fandom, and then there are those of us who are perfectly happy now. it's no use to make such broad generalizations.

No, actually, I'm not talking specifically about my experience. I'm talking about Tumblr's shitty format. If people have found community there, then honestly, great! Good on them! I'm really happy for them. But objectively, its format does not lend itself well to community-forming or discussion-having. And for the love of the internet, I'm not one of the ones saying "it's terrible and it RUINED fandom!!!!1" come on. I don't think it's a change for the better, but fandom is still very much alive and people can still be involved.

The majority of my experience is really long meta posts under readmore with reblogged discussion interspersed with silly jokes. The first time I posted in my fandom's tag, I got three separate messages welcoming me to the fandom and tons of notes. Every time I have any kind of question, I get answered within minutes in the kindest, most helpful way possible.

There are certain things about the format that aren't perfect for fandom, though most of them can be solved through xkit, but fandom, for ME, is better on tumblr.

Like I said...that's great, if it's good for you.

It still doesn't have communities, it doesn't allow you to comment on stuff without also displaying it on your blog, and there's no comment threading. It's a bad platform for that kind of interaction. I reiterate again: it's wonderful that it worked out for you. (Really. Not being sarcastic.) But those features are what they are, and it's a reason many people are disappointed that fandom is moving over there. It's just harder if not impossible to do what many people want to do.

DA and no horse in this race since i like both tumblr and more forum based fandom, but you actually can reply to things on tumblr without it being shown on your blog with the reply function, and people can comod big blogs that people submit to that work pretty much the same as livejournal communities. the lack of comment threading is the killer imo

This. My fandom was DEAD on LJ. There was a comm, but hardly anyone posted, and there certainly wasn't any discussion going on.

Then Tumblr came along, and suddenly there were a ton of people producing and posting fics and art and there actually WAS a community. Tumblr was the best thing that happened to my fandom because now there is a fandom.

Agreed. It's definitely a change for the worse. All I see on Tumblr are entitled brats causing wank and drama, and fandom is just going down into a downward spiral of negativity.

eh, I wasn't talking about the personalities on Tumblr. Those personalities are everywhere, though Tumblr makes it a bit harder to counter them. I'm talking about the format.
