I'm not in the fandom and I've seen all my friends, even pre-Avengers, flail about how awesome Coulson was. I always just presumed that there was just canon somewhere where he was awesome that I just missed.

But AoS? Man, they lost me when that first episode dove headlong into racefail. The big bad is...a black man...with anger issues?

...did you watch the first episode? He wasn't the big bad and he didn't have anger issues. He was experimented on by the big bad, which made him Extremis-tainted.
