No, no, no. "Over-investment" is today's version of female hysterics. Not getting someone else's enthusiasm doesn't give you the right to judge it, diagnose it or put it down.

I'm also sure you have some weird tastes yourself.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure I can judge ridiculous levels of overinvestment all I want.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
there are clearly points at which over-investment is an actual thing, though. there's plenty of examples of people being too enthusiastic to the point of doing shit that is uncool, unacceptable, or harmful. and when that does happen, you know, i do think that i have the right to judge that and say people shouldn't do that shit.

alsol lol @ "Over-investment is today's version of female hysterics"

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not about weird tastes. It's about being so invested in a thing that real life begins to suffer and other people get hurt. I don't really care if someone wants to live in a fantasy world, I do care that their kids/pets/other dependents suffer neglect because of over-investment.

Also, anyone who would go out of their way to track down personal information of someone and post it around without permission, or use it to attack someone because they had a different headcanon... yeah, that's over-investment. And that shit needs to stop.

Explain SPN gossip, then

(Anonymous) 2013-10-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
don't bother trying to argue that, because as you can see people won't get the debate at all lol. everyone pulls out examples like WHAT IF THEY NEGLECT THEIR PETS OR BABIES or THEY HAVEN'T LEFT THE HOUSE IN MONTHS AND STAY UP FOR 24 HOURS AT A TIME. extreme (and more rare) examples.

when really, most of the time, when people say someone is over-invested or too "into" something, that person is simply very happy and vocal and involved in it. and there is in fact no evidence that they are neglecting their aunt's dog's puppies in order to watch a tv show episode or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Or...something like SPN gossip. You telling me those people are sane?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
sane or not, i don't know. im not their psych. but people like to throw around stuff like delusional/over invested/crazy/etc a shit ton in fandom and it's certainly not only at the extreme types like SPN gossip. that was...pretty much the whole point on my comment so apparently. you missed that.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
you're looking at one extreme when someone typing MY FEELS on tumblr gets compared to that group despite sharing nothing else in common but the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
you can say "people are too quick to call other people over-invested" without saying "there is literally no such thing as being over-invested, all levels of investment are equally valid, even if they're poopsocking in order to keep up their surveillance of an actors' house"

there are shades of grey to this shit, people

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
my rule of thumb? if you're getting overly defensive at the mere idea that some people might be over-invested in fandom, you're probably one of them.

people who feel that their own personal level of investment in something is just fine don't usually feel the need to jump in saying "NOT ME!"

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
YEP.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
there's a huge difference between just being enthusiastic about something and being over-invested, though.

if you can't have a discussion about any topic without somehow trying to tie it in to your fandom? that's being over-invested. if you take someone not liking your canon or a particular pairing or character in it as a personal attack? that's being over-invested.

i love my fandoms, i love the characters and the plotlines and i can happily talk about them for hours - to someone who wants to listen. but i also know when to tone it down, and if someone doesn't like my favorite pairing, it's no skin off my nose. it's pretty easy to tell when someone has crossed the line from "enthusiastic" to "now you're just getting creepy."

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
But telling someone (behind their backs) that they're over-invested is such an unimaginative and petty put-down. Even for wank it is the cheap-ass version. At least TRY to formulate what the problem really is, please?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
sometimes that IS the problem. "you are over-invested in this fandom/ship/whatever to the point that you get personally upset if someone else doesn't like it" or "to the point where you can't talk about anything else."

anyone who doesn't think that it can be a problem hasn't ever been stuck in a line to see a movie with someone who could not stop talking about the full history of blah blah blah and how they changed x and y from the original comics because in the comics, it was actually z who did this one thing and they don't understand why the producers had to change that because don't you know how crucial it was to z's character?

there are some things that are not excusable by any level of enthusiasm, full stop.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Enthusiasm is great. Being weird is awesome. I burn an embarrassing amount of time on fandom stuff and I would never put someone down just because they're really into something.

Being unable to disengage, however, and getting as attached to and upset about fictional things as though they were real, is never a good thing.

Say that to religious people.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
DA Oh I want to! But that would be rude. Unless they're dicks to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
anyone want to trot out the 'omg it's just hyperbole, I don't really MEAN IT' argument now?

yeah, been hit with that one more than once.
