I think Fahrenheit 451 is sort of overrated, but you know, that happens. Authors get glorified for things they aren't once the get larger than life. But you know, in the end, I think the guy had an amazing mind, judging from his writing. And that, I always consider a great loss for humanity.

IKR? Christ. It's not like the man's writing didn't influence an entire generation of SFF writers.

Or simply heard of and didn't even bother reading. Why bother reading a book simply because it is considered a classic when I can get a summary from wikipedia/watch the movie/check the Facebook page etc.

And the worst part of it is that I believe it was not a personal favorite and he was pretty miffed about the fact that the underlying message of the book got completely misunderstood anyway, according to him...

He did know how to write, though - some of his prose reads like poetry; and this is totally unbiased as he is not a personal favorite. I also had never seen a picture of him before (I tend to think that the way an author looks is unrelated to the value of their work and thus do not go looking for their pics, usually).

Then again, for a public which embraced S. Meyer, it may simply be that this is no longer a writing quality is no longer recognized or appreciated... Certainly editors and publishers don't value it anymore considering some of the stuff that gets published nowadays. And they wonder why we prefer to read fanfiction.
