That is not stupid question at all. It means "does not equal". You can also see people using a more popular variation that looks like "=/" or "/=".

I've never seen =/ meaning =/=. =/ is an emoticon. (At least I thought? That's how I've always seen/used it.)

I have seen != though.

I prefer =/= because I think it looks neater and that's how I write it (if...I actually have a reason to write it which I guess I haven't in a long time huh)

I like != cause it's used as notation outside of fandom (like for math and programming and such).

Oh, maybe people who use =/= are more into humanities and people who use != are more into the math and sciences you think?
