This.

Any 15 year old sociology student can take something and over-analayze it until it seems bad.

You know, kind of like radical fundies like to do with things like Pokemon , Yu-gi-oh and Harry Potter. "GAIZ PIKACHU IS TOTALLY SYMBOLIC OF THE DEVIL"

not to mention, most of the time tumblr fandom will find problematic things in the most ridiculous places. i recently came across a tumblr moron who refused to see the latest rob zombie movie, not because of all the rampant sexism and revolting characters that tend to be in his movies, but because sherry moon zombie's character had dreadlocks - and that's "appropriating black culture".

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I will admit that is a weird thing to pick out from his movies but white people having dreadlocks is appropriating black culture (I've heard this opinion coming from several black people, so).

but some white people's hair can dread naturally too??? the texture is different but like

it happens

how can

what

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but it wasn't considered a "cool" thing, it was considered dirty and nasty. I have hair like that and used to let it matt up in ropes because I wanted to look, idk, witchy, it was only later that I learnt what dreadlocks were. It doesn't stop me having them as it's so much easier than anything else for me (and I am not from a country with very many African-descent people at all, maybe I would think differently if I was??), but I respect that there are potentially problematic aspects, because there are African-descent people saying there are. I wince at the white rastas anyway.

i don't think dreadlocs are considered 'cool' even on white people, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah? And that's a pretty common opinion held by a lot of black people.

Mind you, it's pretty country specific.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's my problem with it. It implies that "blackness" is one specific culture, when there are many different black cultures around the world.

Tbh, I never saw a problem with white or Asian people wearing dreadlocks. I didn't even know other black people had a problem with it until I saw complaints about it on tumblr. Meh. Whatever. In the grand scheme of things I'm more offended by people who think I'm less intelligent or a lesser parents due to my skin color, rather than people who wear dreadlocks.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-24 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly that is my problem with this whole "white people don't have a culture in the way black people do". To me, throwing all the diverse "black" cultures into one bag and saying "this is black culture" has a very strong racist vibe. As in imperialistic "all those savages are the same" racist.

LOL 15 year old sociology students. Okay.
