Wedding dress styles for larger women?

My friend is getting married next year and is having a bit of a problem with wedding dress shopping. She insists that fat women look ridiculous in wedding dresses. She's not extremely overweight or anything, but she's short and apple-shaped (and she's got big boobs) so it tends to make her look larger than she actually is... and the only wedding dress she tried on was definitely NOT flattering on her, and it really discouraged her. :(

I'm trying to find a style that wouldn't make her look like a "cake", as she put it. Got any suggestions?

you need to show her some Say Yes To The Dress episodes! there are quite a few (NY and Atlanta show) that focus on women with larger bodies and larger breasts. and they happily find their dresses :) the main problem is not that the wedding dresses simply just look bad - they are NOT the proper size. the try on samples are always small sizes so that can make it hard to imagine what it would look like properly fitted (or even get the dress on in some cases.

Watch that 'Say Yes to the Dress' show for a couple weeks. They have women of every size on there, she'll probably see a few she likes.

Also, she needs to try a *lot* more than one dress, and do it with a *good* bra on. A good bra does wonders for the fit of clothing.

Of course, if she hates how her body looks, it's going to be pretty tough no matter what. Good luck!

There are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many styles of wedding dresses. Take her to a good, high-end shop. She doesn't absolutely have to buy from there, but any shopkeeper worth their salt will find a dress that makes her feel gorgeous. And for god's sake, ignore the previous commenter. Weddings are stressful enough without the bride feeling like she needs to lose weight. If she *does* happen to lose weight, a dress can always be taken in.

I have no clue about styles but I can say that I have definitely seen larger women looking absolutely gorgeous in their wedding dress on their wedding day. It is very possible.

(And yes, please ignore the troll-y first comment. There's always gotta be one asshole of the bunch...)
