I always imagined him as originally human.

The tentacles, tattoos, and increasingly metro-sexual clothing irk me to no end, but I *was* sold on the eye thing because it's this constant, like his glasses, so people could bring that into their cosplay etc, plus I've noticed that it's a very fashionable design element right now; eyes, slime etc.

I think it could bring a lot of character to his mannerisms too, and if it's NOT something 'natural' or something he was born with, then I'm down with that. It could have scary religious undertones, and just add a freaky body horror flavor. I like it.
