I didn't say over-invested in fandom. That's an entirely separate issue. I said over-invested in WHAT THEY SEE ON TELEVISION. (Though it does apply to some extent to other media, TV is the hypno-gourd that sits in everyone's home and in some cases never gets turned off, so that's what I'm grousing about today.)

That said, I personally draw the line at people expecting a glorified advertising vehicle which occasionally manages to cough up something of value by accident to provide them with various forms of personal validation. If the magic box does not satisfy, shut the magic box off, disengage and go look somewhere else. If you can't, you've got a problem.

As for why anyone else should listen? Well, that's a personal choice, obviously. If I thought my opinion would meet with universal acclaim then I wouldn't have made it a secret. But if you think there's anything healthy about folks nursing very real perpetual frustration, depression and angst over the fact that the pretend people and made-up stories are not to their taste, you and I will just have to disagree.
