Dragons. I wrote several stories fantasy stories in elementary/middle school with a self-insert main character who was part dragon and could switch between forms and went on epic quests. Good times.

And similar to your mermaid biology, I loved the cartoon Flight of Dragons since it made psuedoscience explanations for the whole flying and the fire breathing.
