I think I know what OP means? Fandom makes me more invested in things than I would be normally, and then the shittiness of the canon is harder to deal with. Fandom also makes me invested in media that I would normally avoid.

Contrary to popular belief, this has nothing to do with tumblr? Big fandoms often grow around shows with large holes and flaws. Some people have the creative urge to fill in and fix those flaws. I don't, but still fall in love with the fandom. I hope this makes sense to people...? I'm working on this same thing and I still enjoy and love lots of things.

At least in the case of Supernatural, people leave that fandom all the fucking time because they're tired of making excuses for canon. It's not rare.
