I am not sure if that is the best approach: whatever works for you, of course, but there is a near-infinite number of great fandoms out there, so what if you end up being driven out of one (or several) by some of their problematic aspects? There's lots more which may be better suited to your tastes.

Unless you mean, hugely popular fandoms where lots of good stuff gets shared all the time so you never lack for content and fellow fans? Yes, that is much more of an issue...

Personally I'd recommend avoiding both meta and real life information about the actors, writers and producers of the show/movie/book/whatever so as to avoid running into stuff that will kill my squee.

Once you have read about how the actor playing a much loved character has cheated on his last three wives, or drops girlfriends like used tissues, it's a bit hard to keep pouring out the love... Just as an example, since I'd better avoid more controversial examples! :D
