I have every sympathy for you: this summer my school took down the beautiful 90 year old American elm I've loved since being taken on visits to the campus when I was a little girl, and a catalpa that was about four feet in diameter at chest height. I suspect the two red elms along one of the paths are going soon as well, and the last of the white pine trees planted by Louis Bessey is probably doomed too. At least the school tries to keep planting trees, but dammit, a young tree whose trunk I could encircle with my two hands is not a replacement.
