It might just be you don't respond to the way he chose to portray Castiel?

Misha has expressed abashment at how he thought he was laying the ground to establish angels as an awkward alien species and all the actors portraying angels following him left him holding the bag and leaving Cas looking like he's just socially adorable awkward.

He has also expressed that he regrets that voice because he has hurt his throat because of it. :C http://youtu.be/cmDJ7DqJWTk

I wish that the other actors would have gone that route. As it is now, the angels are just dickish humans with superpowers and not a different species. Michael was the only one who came across a bit "celestial".

Pretty much. They have so little to mark them as Other that (POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR EPISODE THREE)...

...

I couldn't even tell if the Mata Hari in the last episode was supposed to be an angel or a reaper or something else entirely.

That's the main reason I really, really hate the angels on this show. I know a lot of fans love the whole "dicks with wings" thing. But I wish there was something that distinguished them as dickish angels. Because they just come across as really mean humans (though that can be said for every non-human character in the show).

I was not aware of that. I always took Castiel's awkward behavior on his being a considerably lesser angel than the likes of all the various Archangels of biblical note. Like, he didn't have as much occasion to watch and interact with humans, so he wasn't as good at it.
But I think I was just being nice. And the whole notion was flipped on it's head when pretty much every angel was an asshole with superior social skills.

With current canon as of season 8, I think it can be interpreted that Cas doesn't know as much about humanity/pop culture/standard references/etc as the other angels, because his mind has been wiped over and over and over again as every single time, he's gradually veered toward rebelling against the angel "norm" and exercising free will that angels aren't supposed to have.

So when Dean first met him, who knows how recent the last wipe had been? I know that wasn't the original plan, but it does fit now, doesn't it? :)

I may be remembering wrong, but wasn't he also WAY less awkward back in seasons 4-5? Even 6. He was sort of distant and kick-ass, yes, but not...bumbling? It seems like every season he gets more and more flanderized.

I guess you can say he's kick ass at being an angel, but he's bumbling as a human (or falling angel)? That's how I choose to interpret his character.

Misha was claiming at SDCC that he was happy about how this season's scripts were against that trend, i.e. not using Castiel for easy fish out of water humour.

well, that's definitely not the feeling i got from episode three.

between eating toothpaste and telling everyone and their uncle how new he is at being human, i'd say it had perhaps the highest amount of easy-fish-out-of-water humor ever.

seriously. apparently he got that using a fake name was a good idea but he's still loudly announcing his newfound annoyance with farting?

He definitely suffered from the awkward form of Joey Tribbiani syndrome. But that's not to say he wasn't awkward at all. In season 4 he was a little slow on social cues. Like, the whole "Uriel's the funniest angel in the garrison". And not to mention his complete ignorance to personal space. But his "awkwardness" (if you can even call it that) was more from him being a serious, straight-laced, tightass. It was like he didn't even care enough about anything if it wasn't part of his life mission.

Sorta reminds me of Cameron from The Sarah Connor Chronicles. In the first episode she was really normal but after that she was a socially awkward mess. Not that I minded that much because Cameron 2.0 was definitely more entertaining and made the show. But it would've been nice to see her show more of her humanity by being just like them instead of saying "I can feel" but keeping that mono face. :-|

I wish they'd done that, too!
Angels are not human, they're nothing like us *at all*. Making them asshole humans is kinda boring. I like them being utterly out of touch with humans on every level except 'do what i tell you to do, mud monkey' and 'don't you dare bash God'.

I think that's down to the writers too. The dialogue and characterization is inconsistent in that regard as well.
