Not sure if it counts as horror, but I have never been creeped out by any story as much as I was by "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates.

Oates can be pretty brutal, so I'd count it as horror, yeah.

That story, man. I read it exactly once, about 4 years ago, and it still resonates through my head every now and then. Freaky shit, especially because it's an entirely plausible chain of events that could actually happen irl.

Check out the movie based on the story "Smooth Talking" with a young Laura Dern. Sticks with you just as much as the story though it's actually less brutal.
