For me Supernatural has always been a show that only really works in pieces and only comes together occasionally, leaving a pile of forgettable and even shitty episodes. One of the pieces I adore is Bobby, however. In fact, I like all of the side characters, both dead and alive, more than the Winchester boys. I also happen to like Castiel a lot, but I can understand why people wouldn't like him. His stare was really unsettling to be at first but I think he has a great story line that is really relateable. I get the whole "having to leave behind the per-packeged answers and learn to think for yourself" thing. For me all of the "meh" and "that's crap" is out weighed by the stuff I like, but if that isn't working for you then tell your friend you don't like it.
