Help me pick a NaNo plot

(Anonymous) 2013-10-26 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
So, I'm thinking about doing NaNoWriMo next month, but I'm not sure what to do yet. I have two plotbunnies that have been bouncing around in my head; they seem equally difficult to write for me, but also equally interesting, and I've spent an equal amount of time coming up with characters and plots and worldbuilding.

So, I thought I'd ask you guys what you think is more interesting. Can you please read the concepts and let me know which one you like more?

1 - A teenage boy gets sucked into the internet. Websites are reimagined as real-life-type-locations: Facebook is an apartment complex, eBay is a marketplace, YouTube is a film festival, 4chan is the shady part of town that everyone avoids, MySpace is a creepy old ghost town, et cetera. Most people he encounters are at home sitting in front of their computers to communicate with him, but to him it appears as though they are interacting with him face-to-face, and to them it appears he's just posting on a forum/sending messages with his screen name. This boy receives anonymous messages giving him missions to complete certain tasks in exchange for eventually being sent home, involving going to certain websites and finding certain people, or trying to stop viruses from spreading. Eventually he meets others who are trapped like him and they work together to complete the missions and find out why they're there. (I obviously have more planned out than this, but this is the main idea.)

2 - a "magic battling monsters" type story a la Pokemon or Monster Rancher, except aimed at older teens instead of kids. Kind of a deconstruction in the sense that it will have a basic plot that is similar to a typical battling monsters story, but eventually gets dark and deals with ethical issues. A world where a beloved children's sports is battling with Familiars, creatures with incredible powers that bond with and protect one human for the duration of the human's life. Familiars were originally created as weapons, but since they bond better with children, it became common to give children Familiars and groom said children to become warriors later in life. However, in peaceful times, battling with Familiars is considered a harmless children's sport. An ordinary kid discovers that her brother has gone missing and his disappearance is related to the 3 Original Familiars, who no one has ever been able to bond with and control. She and her friends go on a journey to look for him.

...Anyway, sorry for the tl;dr but if either of these sound interesting to you guys, let me know please.

I like both of these, but especially #2 since I'm a pokemon fan.

I'm a sucker for monster stories, I'm gonna go with the last one.

#2 - Familiars? I wouldn't go with that or people will think you're doing Ni No Kuni fanfic. lol Sounds interesting, though.

Thanks for the input; I'm not familiar with Ni no Kuni. :) It's just a working name for now, so I'll think about it. I could follow in the shoes of Pokemon, Digimon, and Neopets and come up with some morpheme to use as a prefix for the name of the creatures + everything in the world that's related to them.

No prob, your plot does sound really interesting! I just finished playing Ni No Kuni, which is basically Pokemon x Studio Ghibli, and the "Pokemon" are called Familiars. Then again, the word "familiar" is kind of not made up by then, so I guess you could go for it. Good luck with Nano.

I actually like the first one.

Although the second one is interesting ...(that sounds like a fic I'm doing actually :) I would like to see your take on it.

Thanks! I'd like to see your fic, too, if you ever feel like posting it here. :)

It's a Pokemon AU type thing.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/388591/chapters/636982

It contains AUs of Harry Potter and Danny Phantom characters along with my own characters. I constructed separate parallel journeys for each group the three groups never really meet one another. Though there is a fourth bit that overlaps with some kids whose families are involved in Team Rocket.

It really has a theme about growing up and how sometimes in life things aren't as magical and awesome as you expect them to be (like Pokemon journeys). The chapters tend to run a bit long too. But I'm really excited about where this story could go.

2. I think 1 would work better as a complete "what if the world was like this?" story.
