What the hell is gross sobbing? Is it snotty, messy crying or is it something else?

I believe that's the idea it's conveying.

Usually used in reaction to... practically anything, to emphasize a person's sad feelings.

Oh okay. I feel kind of silly now. I thought that maybe it there's was some other meaning for it. One other than the obvious. I've never seen the phrase used before.
