(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 05:28 am (UTC)(link)Some fans of the show swear by Season 1-3 (which centered around Sam, Dean, their dad and the monsters and demons they hunted,) as the Golden Age of Supernatural, and deplore everything that's come since. The boys were much younger and they've both changed quite a bit since then, as has the supporting cast. Meg was introduced (portrayed by a different actress) and was a major player in Season 1, and she saw significant play in Season 2. Bobby first came along toward the end of S1 as well.
Others (like me) liked Seasons 4 and 5 better, after the angels were introduced and the show's mythology expanded to include Heaven's machinations. Bobby was an important part of the story by that time, and there was a strong theme of family and camaraderie (especially in Season 5) that I've felt has been largely missing since. Castiel has, in fact, changed quite a bit since his debut as well. And Meg, though not a major character, had some interesting moments in Season 5.
Seasons 6 and 7 were fairly unpopular all around, though they do have their fans; a number of opinions as to exactly what was wrong with it have been put forth, ranging from Sera Gamble's ineptitude as showrunner to the simple fact that Kripke's original story arc had been played out and there was no clear roadmap for continuing. However, if you're a Bobby fan, episode 6x04, "Weekend at Bobby's," is not to be missed!
Many of us feel Season 8 was an improvement over those seasons in a lot of ways, as the supporting cast that Gamble decimated and continuity with Seasons 1-5 are slowly being rebuilt. The jury's largely still out on Season 9 three episodes in.
