It's okay that you didn't enjoy yourself! Not everyone is going to. I'm sorry you had a bad experience (wth to the hitting thing; that's out of line), but I bet they aren't all like that. :(

It's a shame your first experience was one that put you off the idea of going again. That said, there's nothing wrong with just enjoying fandom the way you have been; conventions aren't a necessity.
