You just start seeing fanfic as regular literature instead of a wish fulfillment tool.

This, exactly. And suddenly you barely find any fic up to par.

Really? Because I've read a lot of fic much higher in quality than a lot of successful original fiction.

You have to wade through a towering pile of crap to find it, but I never find that much fun even before the glow wears off.
