I had a similar experience at the first con I ever went to (when I was eight; it was a Star Trek con), and it kept me from going to another one for like twenty years. Then I went to Comic Con under very different circumstances—I knew a bunch of other women from the intertubes who were cool, and made the whole experience far more enjoyable than going alone.
