I have never grinned with delight at any fic as much as this one! For creativity and open-minded thoughtfulness as well as for general good-naturedness. For those who wonder about canon Mary Morstan:

The Lighthouse Keeper (Sherlock Holmes (original canon)):

Gardnerhill is the awesome. I recommend reading all her stuff. That Mary is my permanent headcanon, and not because I want a handwave for Holmes and Watson repeatedly vanishing for a couple days on cases at random intervals. It's great in ways that have nothing whatsoever to do with Holmes or Watson and everything to do with Mary as she was actually depicted in the books.

Here are my faves of hers that I've bookmarked:

"Formication": http://gardnerhill.livejournal.com/67219.html
- Holmes + cocaine addiction + denial

"So I be Written in the Book of Love": http://gardnerhill.livejournal.com/105290.html
- if Mary had lived

"Over, Under, Through": http://gardnerhill.livejournal.com/104049.html
- one-shot disaster fic. Can't describe it further but omg

"The Firm": http://gardnerhill.livejournal.com/86130.html
- SHE MANAGED TO MAKE NIGEL BRUCE!WATSON AWESOME.

"Top Ten Rejected Insurance Claims from 221B Baker Street": http://gardnerhill.livejournal.com/85662.html
- I Am Not Drunk, I Swear To God Lestrade, There Was This Giant Rat

"Steel True, Blade Straight": http://gardnerhill.livejournal.com/84705.html
- about Wiggins, leader of the Baker Street Irregulars

There are a lot more. She's written a loooot of awesome little ficlets and series in response to a writing prompt called "July Writing Prompt" that you can go through as well. Going through her "Sherlock Holmes" tag will do it.
