I don't think you're a bad person or 'looking down' on anyone for being embarrassed for people with poor personal hygiene. Social skills or no social skills, that is just... basic living. I've got zero social skills, but I won't even leave the house if I have greasy hair, never mind without showering or brushing my teeth.

That said, it was probably a bad, unrepresentative experience, though. I've never been to a con or anything fandomy IRL (I, too, fear second-hand embarrassment) but I've heard SO many good things from good people, I really believe the majority of them aren't inhabited by these sort of people.
