Many, many people take cons as an excuse to act like complete and utter oblivious idiots at best, irresponsible jerks who at worst.

You know, I really like conventions and all, but I think this is the worst thing about any sort of mass recreational activity. It makes people want to "cut loose." Which in some cases translates to "act like a goddamn fool."

At my "home con" a couple years ago, some idiot was drinking in a balcony room on an upper floor of the con hotel and tossed the bottle off the balcony. It landed on and broke a glass dome that covers the bottom couple of floors off to the side. There was a photoshoot going on there at the moment.

No one was injured, but a lot of people COULD have been, and the repairs were going to be several thousand dollars, if I recall.

Same con a couple years before that, I got up Sunday morning to take my stuff to the car and saw that the revolving door that was by that dome had had the glass smashed out, so there was "CAUTION" tape everywhere. I went out the normal door beside it, just in time to see a car stop at the little gate that came down across the exit to the parking lot... and then drive right through it, breaking it off.

And then there was the fire alarm that went off just as a few thousand people had been seated for the masq, because some moron thought it would be cool to pull an extinguisher off the wall and pose with it like a firearm.

I love this con and its staff dearly, and I have tons of fun with my friends, but HOLY CRAP could some of the attendees use a good smack in the face.

Geez, I hope the people who were responsible for the damage were caught and banned for life. Gotta weed out that sort of asshole.

Reports in the dome case and the fire alarm case (which were the ones that got people REALLY pissed) were that the people who did it were identified and depending on who was telling the story, either arrested, banned, or both. Hopefully both.

The other stuff, and things that happen every year like people tipping over planters, and reportedly people pulling the urinals off the walls in the men's rooms? Not a clue if those morons are being nailed.

I'm honestly surprised the con is still allowed in the hotel, even though they've got a contract for another couple of years. I love the venue, and there would be a lot of difficulty finding another one big enough to accommodate the con (which is already too big for the venue, which may contribute to the problem), so I'm GLAD the hotel hasn't pulled out... but I couldn't have blamed them if they did. :/
