Destiel confirmed Noncanon wank

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sooo, I'm just now hearing about this, but there was this huge blowup after the third episode aired where Cas has sex with a woman. Basically an executive producer for the show answered questions on twitter and flat out said that no, Cas and Dean are not and were never intended to be bisexual.

This of course unleashed the hounds of hell and he was spammed with people calling him a homophobe, and a queer baiter, and telling him the show was going to lose all its ratings now, etcetc. He back-tracked with neckbreaking speed and said "No, wait, well, maybe, you never know! Keep watching and see!" and just ouch.

From an outsiders perspective, it is painfully obvious that SPN is not this groundbreaking SJ show that the Destiel fandom seems to think it is, and that Destiel was just never going to happen. I feel bad for the guy, but he really should not have gone with backtracking and queer baiting at the end there.

...I've tried watching SPN and just not seen the appeal. Watching the fandom is so much more entertaining.

I didn't agree with the secret claiming SPN was a notably, intentionally conservative show, but I'm not sure how anyone could get "groundbreaking SJ show" out of it. (Look at its shoddy track record with female and non-white characters.) It's never struck me as a show that gave much thought to Larger Societal Issues or Sending Messages, with a few possible exceptions which mostly didn't work very well.

It's not conservative, no. SPN is a 'man' show, in a sense. Dudes riding around in a sweet car, getting chicks, fighting demons, listening to rock music, yeahhhhhhhh! kind of show.

It's kind of painful to see the obvious disconnect between the Destiel fandom and the people who work on the show. (One of the directors also said that Destiel doesn't exist and was confused by all the wank, so there you go, too) I think that they forget that the SPN fandom is not 99 percent Destiel, and one percent other. It's a mixed bag of people who ship other things besides Destiel, and the people who have never heard of tumblr and only know shipping as a term for packages. They live in a sort of bubble of their own meta writings and self assuring circles that they really convinced themselves that SPN was a different show from what it actually is, and that they were totally always planning to make Dean Bisexual from the start, and yaddayadda. It's...sort of like how FOX news and the Republicans were so convinced that Romney was going to win that they were dumbstruck when he didn't.
