(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)I think your problem is that you went alone. You gotta have someone you can geek out with! You can do it a bit with strangers, especially if they're running a booth about whatever it is you're into, chances are they're into it too and relish the opportunity to gab about it. But it's better with a little group of your own, you know? and even if you run into a ton of shitty people, you're insulated. I truly think you should give the convention circuit another try, with this one little change, because the difference can be absolutely astounding. It REALLY CAN be what you hoped it would be, and even if there are jerky outliers, they won't matter as much. (if you don't have a particularly nerdy crew...possibly overstepping, but whereabouts do you live? Like if you're around Toronto, come join my group at FanExpo next year! I shall steer you to all the fun parts and we can avoid the dickbags together. And if you are elsewhere, why don't you start up an "anyone going to [local convention]?" thread in the forum of your choice shortly before the next big one in your area? Meeting people you've already chatted to can be nerve-wracking but it's fun and often very rewarding as well, and to do it in a big nerd hub like a con is kinda perfect)
