huh, I've never really thought about this pairing before. I guess a lot of people might be drawn to it because Applejack and Rarity are opposites in a lot of ways. Applejack is cool with doing a lot of physical labor, is very relaxed and easygoing and has no problem getting her hands (well, hooves) dirty while Rarity is more high maintenance, prefers to have others do heavy lifting and likes to be clean and well groomed at all times. A lot of people are really into the "opposites attract" idea when it comes to shipping. Personally, it's Fluttershy/Rarity all the way for me. I don't really go searching for art and fic of it though because pony smut is just too much for me and that's usually what I run into

This is sadly common in fandom.

The idea of opposites attract gets the fans' attention.
They ship it.
They want them to hook up.
They write fanfiction.
The fanfiction... doesn't keep the personalities that attracted the "opposites attract" attention in the first place.

Honestly, to me, it's all about shitty writing. You can love a pairing but if you can't write your way out of a wet paper sack you won't get their personalities right and your priorities are all about the pairing without the characters and their personalities themselves being as important, you end up with bad fanfiction like this.

Because I think a good writer could write Rarity and AJ in-character and paired up and it could make complete sense. It's doable. But rare to find some one who can pull it off, in ANY fandom.

For what it's worth, people with radically different personalities form long-lasting relationships all the time. A lot of times it's not just interests that attract people to one another, it's their morals, their values, and their overall personality.

I have a friend who is just learning this. She loves a man she literally has nothing in common with because his personality compliments her own very well. Your interests don't necessarily have to line up, and in fact it can make for a more active and fun relationship because you're both doing new things together.

EDIT: Radically different interests /and/ personalities. Personalities can compliment without being the same. Should've clarified but I'm all anon'd.

I can ship it since the season 3 premiere. Applejack is the flirtiest, most dashing Southern gentlepony ("Aren't good things better when they're... a Rarity?"), and Rarity is just fluttering at the attention.

Sex.

I've seen people with absolutely nothing else in common stay together for ages because they hit each other's kinks and the sex is great. Then, kids. Then, moral obligation and inertia.

I ship it, so I'll go ahead and explain my own logic for it. The ship got my attention after the episode where Applejack and Rarity didn't get along but came to respect each other after the sleepover debacle. I see the pairing working with the two of them definitely being opposites and not particularly enjoying each other's interests, but being drawn to each other due to what they respect in each other. I like the idea of them taking turns indulging the other by occasionally spending time doing the thing the other one likes, too. Ex; sometimes Applejack will let Rarity make a pretty princess out of her. Sometimes Rarity will let herself get a little muddy participating in a rodeo or something of the sort with Applejack. It's all about the respect that goes with what opposites they are for me.

I never see Twi and Pinkie together and I ship them.
