(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)The idea of opposites attract gets the fans' attention.
They ship it.
They want them to hook up.
They write fanfiction.
The fanfiction... doesn't keep the personalities that attracted the "opposites attract" attention in the first place.
Honestly, to me, it's all about shitty writing. You can love a pairing but if you can't write your way out of a wet paper sack you won't get their personalities right and your priorities are all about the pairing without the characters and their personalities themselves being as important, you end up with bad fanfiction like this.
Because I think a good writer could write Rarity and AJ in-character and paired up and it could make complete sense. It's doable. But rare to find some one who can pull it off, in ANY fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 12:40 am (UTC)(link)I have a friend who is just learning this. She loves a man she literally has nothing in common with because his personality compliments her own very well. Your interests don't necessarily have to line up, and in fact it can make for a more active and fun relationship because you're both doing new things together.

I've seen people with absolutely nothing else in common stay together for ages because they hit each other's kinks and the sex is great. Then, kids. Then, moral obligation and inertia.
