Haven't seen this film, can't remember the fairytale, is this some hackneyed old analogy for a woman's precious virginity?

Not that I'm aware. That bit wasn't in the fairytale, and in the movie it was because they had to establish that she couldn't cut her hair. If the brown hair had grown just like the blond hair, she would've had a weird streak of brown hair and wouldn't that have raised questions.

Actually, I assumed that's why it was so short - she or Goethel kept cutting it for aesthetic reasons. I kind of figured that her hair just turned into 'normal' hair once cut, not that it actively stopped growing/was unable to grow.

I'm pretty sure Disney didn't show the brown steak of hair because it would have looked weird during all the scenes.
