Inspired (heh) by secret #1... what are some *inspirational* books you've read, or avoided? Do you still like them or do you hate them/still hate them?

World War Z inspired me to prepare for a potential life of zombie warfare.

For a serious one, Schindler's List (thought the movie is better).

And I still love both.

I've never actually read The Four Agreements but when a friend told me about it and I found out what the four agreements were, I thought they sounded pretty inspirational:

Be Impeccable With Your Words
Don't Take Anything Personally
Don't Make Assumptions
Always Do Your Best

I mean, they should kind of go without saying but I think a lot of us tend to forget to consciously apply them in our lives, even when we know rationally that doing so would help. I personally find that not taking things personally and avoiding making too many assumptions helps me a lot, making me happier and making people around me happier, too. The fact that most SJWs break these rules on a daily basis is probably the major strike against them, in my book.

Robert Fulghum. Granted, I was a preteen, so there's no accounting for taste, right? (Aaaaaand now someone's going to post below me that he's some kind of closet serial rapist or something, and that's only just come to light....) Same with the James Herriot books, which, yeah. I still have the books, haven't reread them lately, dunno if they would go over OK or not.

I avoid religious self-help books like they're the devil incarnate. (I'm Christian, and I say this....) Unfortunately this brand of "literature" is inordinately popular amongst some of my friends right now. In that same vein, I actually can't stand Sue Thomas' autobiography, for the same reasons. Too pushy, tralalala, empty belief solves everything, um no, I live in the real world and still have real faith, thanks, but no. (I'm also deaf. Let's just say her employment experiences as a PWD are...unique...and leave it at that.) Same with the secular self-help "emotional intelligence"-themed books, which tend to leans towards making their readers self-victimize, IMO. So not my thing.

*blink* Wow, that escalated quickly. :P Sorry. Good inspirational books, hmmm. Blood, Sweat, and Tea by Tom Reynolds, and Millions of Souls by Philip Riteman, are two recent ones that spring to mind. You can get the first one here: http://manybooks.net/titles/reynoldstother06BloodSweatAndTeaCC.html

Don't read inspirational stuff as in "THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN TO BE INSPIRATIONAL" too much. The only one I can remember off the top of my is The Five People You Meet in Heaven, which I liked.

(If movies count though, I really like It's a Wonderful Life, The Shawshank Redemption, The Pursuit of Happiness, and Up.)

My friend lent me "The Alchemist" to read.

I fucking hate that book. Hate hate HATE. The entire "philosophy" behind it is insulting bullshit.
