true but it's very connected in my book. i don't think the fandom would be NEARLY so terrible about the female character is THE SHOW ITSELF didn't encourage exactly that attitude

I'm not sure. You have other fandoms with great female characters but the slash shippers hate them because they get int he way of their ship. I guess we'll never know but I think it could at least help.

yes but it's not AS HUGE of a widespread issue as it is in SPN fandom. In other fandoms you'll ALWAYS have slash-happy fans who hate females just because females. but it's not as normal and accepted and freakin' overwhelming because the show or series or movie they're fanning for doesn't hate its own women as much as SPN does. therefore it's easier to find their fandom might LIKE the female characters being presented (since they're actually being presented AS likeable)

I don't know about that. Back in the summer before season 3, when there weren't that many female characters on the show yet to be treated horribly, it was announced that Bela and Ruby would be joining the show. 90% of the comments were people hating the characters, sight-unseen, and being absolutely horrible about it. I kept an open mind and was excited about them joining, and I ended up loving Bela, and it was really, really difficult to deal with the hate even from the start.

I came in late to the party after SPN had been on for 2 seasons, so S3 was my first season to watch the show week by week. I adored Bella and missed the hate, but reading back on it, I'm always so surprised. She was a great character.

Yes, I remember that, too. And I also recall a lot of people DID actually hate Jo, because she did come off as a possible love interest at first.

I hated Jo because she was an obnoxious brat, not because of any possible love interest.
