I really like Ender's Game even though OSC is a homophobic dickbag. People can have shitty, wrong opinions and still create worthwhile art.

It seems to me a lot of people who defend Ender's Game/OSC can't deal with the cognitive dissonance of enjoying a novel written by a scumbag. It's a blind spot for them.* And I can understand that.

I missed out on Ender's Game back in the day so Card never had the same kind of cultural cachet it does with a lot of (mostly male) people my age. And you know what? I'm glad about that, because I totally understand, and totally hate, that horrible feeling you get when something you really liked turns out to have been made by someone really awful. (Thanks a lot, Dave Mustaine!) The argument to "separate the art from the artist" is bullshit. I understand that people are flawed and that includes content creators -- if I had to ditch everything by someone who did or said something I disagreed with I'd probably wouldn't even read my own fiction. And this is something some of my friends don't get -- I've been asked by friends if I stopped watching Winona Ryder films after she was busted for shoplifting, and I have to wonder, are my friends fucking stupid? Stealing something is hardly anywhere near the same category as actively serving on the board of a certified hate group that actively worked to oppress people like Card did.

I seem to have forogtten my central point. Boilerplate bigotry like what this fic writer is doing? Meh, no big deal. I'll get outraged if she like, donates money to anti-gay groups or something. Other than that, who gives a shit?
