Re: this is a thread about Asperger's

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I was diagnosed with Asperger's in 1991. My high school counselor told my parents to take me to a psychiatrist because they thought I had autism.

I got into fandom after I was diagnosed and it was the first time I felt I could connect with people. I could understand them and they could understand me and even when we couldn't it didn't matter because we all loved the same thing. Fandom isn't like that for me anymore and I don't talk to new people anymore because we usually can't relate. I also don't like all the young people who think Aspberger's is cool, even the ones who don't lie about having it. They almost never figure out I have it but if I say I do they usually treat me like I'm some sort of hero but also dangerous. I don't understand it and I don't like it. I want fandom to be about the things we like about a show or movie or book, not social and medical issues.
