Re: What are you, deaf?
(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)Well, I think they sorted themselves out, up above. But, as someone who's always been deaf, I've seen the "proper term" come full circle: When I was growing up, call me "hearing impaired" and you were spoiling for a fight. "Hard of hearing" was the term of choice for those of us with residual hearing who were raised outside of Deaf culture. NOW, apparently, hard of hearing is ableist and terrible and whatever and "hearing impaired" is the go-to that is, for unfathomable to me reasons, OK by society.
So this is why I now say I'm deaf. (Technically, I am. It's not a freaking bell curve, after all. It's a spectrum, like anything else.) But I have literally seen this change take place over the last twenty years, and I just can't wrap my head around it.
Re: What are you, deaf?
(Anonymous) 2013-10-28 06:39 am (UTC)(link)DA. Shaking my head and smiling at this. I'm not deaf, so wasn't aware of this, but it definitely mirrors so many things in my life. Things seem to go round and round in circles, don't they? Maybe we're all doomed to relive the past, even if we DO know it.
