What are your thoughts on yaoi?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-27 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
And why do you think people have so many thoughts on yaoi?

They're definitely not representational of actual gay relations and most would be unhealthy in real life, but if they're your thing to get your rocks off to I don't really care.

And probably because yaoi fangirls were really vocal back in the day and gay things weren't quite as accepted as they are now.

I was going to write my own comment, but this pretty much summed it up perfectly.

Yaoi can be either bad in a hilariously entertaining way, or bad in a slightly disturbing way.

Pretty sure 99.9999% of it is not representative of RL gay relationships.

I don't think the Kinokuniya is any more overrun by weeaboos than it ever has been but I've only been in there like twice in the last 5 years so I Don't really know any better than you do.

Basically this was a useless comment.

if you were shopping in the "yaoi comics" section, then you also qualified as a weeaboo, just sayin.

I still keep tabs on my favorite mangakas. Also I'm always sad that the shittier BL mangas (ie. Okane ga nai) are more popular than the better ones. Ah well.

I hate yaoi, the entire genre is a sickening pile of rapish, heteronormative bullshit, and the fanbrats make me want to beat their heads against the nearest solid surface. I've also got the same general opinion towards slash fans and slash fiction, since a lot of them seem to draw from the same tropes that always show up in yaoi and just no.

I unapologetically love the fuck out of yaoi.

And I'm gay.

Honestly, people who say it isn't "representative of real gay relationships" - sure, but neither are most straight manga portrayals representative of real life straight people. Why does yaoi get picked on for being unrealistic?

(also, I've found that a lot of the straight defenders don't realize that some of these pairings aren't necessarily far off, as much as they hate it, tops and bottoms do exist in real life)

I'm still not even sure what it is or why it gets talked about so much, and I really have zero interest in finding out.

It's two dudes boning, as envisioned by (largely young, straight) Japanese women. It's a bit of a dated term but it still crops up here and there. These days people usually call it "BL".

"Bara" is two dudes boning as envisioned by (almost exclusively) gay Japanese men.

"Slash" is two dudes boning as envisioned by (largely young, straight, but a sizable number of bisexual and lesbian) Western women (and some queer men).

...That's really all you'll ever need to know.

Also, the specific phrase was at one point a meme originating on Fandom Wank and implied that the person being questioned was going off on a long-winded and/or off-topic rant that no one cared about.
