Is this dumb or egotistical of me?

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2013-10-27 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So like I mentioned earlier, I'm trying to write a webcomic. I've struggled a bit in the process (just recently decided I just want to redraw a few of the pages and do them up in color) but I'm steadily getting it together.

I bought a hardcover sketchbook and have started using it as a sort of 'character source book' (like I've seen many animes/mangas have). Basically an encyclopedia of characters and story information(pictures of settings later on perhaps). I figured it would help me keep track of characters and such.

I feel kind of self conscious about it...is this a sign I have a big ego or I'm conceited. I know I tend to get really invested in things....and it just....worries me that it means something bad about me that I'm so into and attached to this story.

I don't really understand how this would make you conceited or egotistical? It seems pretty logical, to have a book to keep track of characters and information if you're working on something like a webcomic. I honestly don't get where you're getting the idea this is a bad thing.

I dunno...the only thing really egotistical is that I like to call it my "official sourcebook."

But eh.....I don't know either. Now that I think about it it seems like it couldn't hurt either way.

I think that's a really smart idea. Long things like webcomics get convoluted, and sometimes you forget something important. Helping yourself keeping continuity is always a good idea.

Ah okay...

and keeping continuity that's always a good thing yes. Making sure I don't forget something I established in volume 1. (especially because breaking your own rules is something I make fun of Twilight for doing, it would be embarrassing if I did it XD)

sorry I was late to respond lost internet for a little bit :<

How would having a reference book to help you keep track of things be egotistical?

Many, many artists organize their ideas - they may use a binder or multiple notebooks or sketchbooks.
In fact, if you're doing a webcomic, having a place to put all your ideas and sketches is a MUST.

I use a notebook for my stories, and have separate sections for plot, characters, and setting.

If you're really that worried about being egotistical - there's always a bit of narcissism in creating something. There's a part of you that will think "WOW this idea I just had is amazing and really really good!". And that part will help you see it through to completion.

Just turn it off when you're trying to edit or be open to criticism.

I dunno.

and yeah I figured that's why it's a good idea.

I have this little voice in my head that is over critical and makes anything I think or do to be egotistical or something. I'm overly critical of myself.

keeping some kind of notebook to stay organized is what you really need to do if you want to make the comic work, tbh.

Ah... well I'm glad I decided to do it then. Thanks. Also...I have tons of lined notebook. Tons.
