And there are some countries where I will receive the threat of execution or torture if I practice my religious beliefs. If we tot up individual lists of countries that want us dead, and my list is longer than yours, would that legitimize me?

While I think that torturing or threatening people based on their religion is unspeakably awful, I would like to point out that religion is a choice, and homosexuality is not. So even though both forms of governmental persecution are disgusting, there's still a fundamental difference between them that makes comparing them not really work.
