Re: The Gay is Strong With This One

I see him more as being asexual. He doesn't seem sexually interested in anyone.

The person he admired the most was L, and that was because of his intellect. If L was a girl, I feel like he'd feel the same way.

Well, I am refraining from writing my usual essay (the one from like six years ago when this fandom was big lol). But a couple things. First, Light clearly disregards all female characters and rejects or is annoyed by their sexual interest. So, not straight, anyway. His relationship with L is more ambiguous, though I find it easy to interpret their relationship as sexual. Light does show interest in several male characters, namely L and Mikami, and at one point in the beginning says a weird sort-of-flirting line to a male classmate (something like, "Aren't you gonna send me a Christmas card?" and the other guy is like "Light, I only send cards to girls.) Also, the part where Misa accuses L and Light of being gay together... even as a joke, to alert the audience of the possibility straight in the narrative seems pretty significant to me.

Of course we'll never know, asexual, gay, or just uninterested, and of course there's no canon implication either way. But I can't help but feel the author considered, even to a tiny extent, Light as not-straight when he wrote the manga.

Hmm, yeah, you bring up a good point in that Light pretty much has no interest in any female whatsoever. While this can be tied to a lack of sexual interest, I think Light's misogyny plays a role as well. It seems he clearly views females as inferior tools, and finds their attraction to him kind of pathetic.

You do bring up a good point about Misa worrying about L being gay for Light (which is kind of funny when L seems to actually have a more explicit interest in Misa than Light. Doesn't he say she's cute at one point or something?) Light definitely isn't default straight. He seems to make a genuine effort to appear straight, though.

Yeah, Light definitely tries to act straight. I actually think if we read Light as gay, the whole pretending to date Misa thing kind of takes on a double meaning. In the plot he pretends to date girls to keep up an image, but we also know from the beginning that he puts on a front to come across as perfect but hides his feelings (well, mainly about being depressed with the world and stuff). Then, when he has the death note, it's his "secret identity" that he has to cover up. I don't know, I think it makes the story more interesting.

I think he might've flirted with her as Kira to keep her happy, but I can't remember him feeling any more than feeling obligated toward her or that he should keep her safe because she's vulnerable when he loses his memories. I know the manga says that Light didn't date at all in high school and told girls he was waiting until college (another interesting point?)

L's sexuality is another topic. LOL I think he's just a pervert. I'd say he's bi and would be happy to threesome Light and Misa.
