Here's the thing Stella. Since so many are self-diagnosed, it's our opinion against theres. And most of the time, nobody involved is a therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist or the like, so both opinions are equally valid. They decided they had it, somebody else decided they were faking it! It works!

Also, it's still true that having a reason for doing something doesn't wipe away the fallout. You end up being an ass on the internet, that will be recognized and responded to even if your label is 100% valid.

"And most of the time, nobody involved is a therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist or the like, so both opinions are equally valid."

Well, except for how one person's opinion is shaped by their knowledge of themselves over the course of their entire lives, and the other person's opinions are shaped by their impression of a few comments on the internet.

But sometimes it's not "a few comments on the internet"--sometimes it's a repeating pattern of terrible behavior on the internet, one that's consistent for years. And invariably--when it results in the person being banned from forums and communities--they pester the mods, insisting that "Banning me is ableist!" And then go on to write self-pitying posts elsewhere about how "Neurotypicals are all terrible people."

Great comment on a subject that has a whole lot of awful ones, especially in fandom.

I'm glad you did this.
