But even if it's set in the future, they've had generations of nutrition gathered purely from medieval farming techniques; i.e. far fewer calories, much lower protein diet. They'd be shorter than we are now as a result.

I just wish that for once every second male fantasy character (in your traditional "medieval Europe with dragons (/titans)" wasn't six feet tall. Oh men like that existed, but they were about as common (and as freakishly tall compared to the rest of the general populace) as men who are 6'6" and above are now.

...Just out of curiousity, why do you think SnK is set in the future?

DA, but given some of their past medical achievements and the fact that some characters have obviously been genetically modified, it would make more sense for the show to be a post-apocalypse sort of setup rather than actual medieval times. Also, imo, it's heavily implied that the Titans came about as a result of humans rather than just showing up as a natural predator. It really makes me think some people were screwing around, playing god, and caused the whole mess.

...that's the theory I like, anyway. :) I doubt it's true.

How do we know it was a "medical" achievement and not just the standard fantasy explanation: magic?

When I say medical achievements, I'm talking about Doctor Jaeger curing some form of the plague, as well as the understanding in the series of disease and infection. The medical community all around seems advanced beyond the setting.

That's a good point, and if it were a Western work I might be on board with you, but in Japanese fantasy it's always been considered fair game (at least greater than the extent to which it is in English-language fantasy media) to ignore the order of the scientific discovery of anything before the late Meiji era (early 1900s).

You might still be right, but it's not as much of a tell as it would be had the author been from a different literary culture. The medical technology does seem advanced, but so does the 3D-gear - especially for a civilization that still uses ball-shot cannons and single-shot muskets. If they're in the future, why did they keep pressurized gas canisters and the knowledge of chemistry required to create them, and lose all of the artillery? Being able to (accurately and reliably) blow the back of a Titan's neck to pieces seems like it would come in awfully handy.

The median anon from way above: I haven't read the manga, only watched the anime and I remember this one episode where the General and Eren had been talking Titan theories before he sealed the wall with the rock. It was mentioned that some people think that Titans had been invented after the wars (sounded like our modern conflicts) to make humanity unite against a common enemy.
