Research help!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a presentation due this Thursday about how The Prince by Machiavelli and Utopia by Thomas More were received in their time period.

And I just can't find any information about this. I've looked through my books and tried googling just about anything I can think of regarding the subject and the only things that show up are stuff like modern criticisms of the two books.

And I'm not going to ask you guys to do my homework, but do any of you have any idea where I can find anything about this? Everything will be appreciated!

Look for biographies of the authors, then find the point in time where they published the book.

Thank you so much! I will look up some biographies in the library tomorrow. :)

What keywords are you using in your search?

Also, if you haven't already, check and see if your school/college or public library has online access to scholarly journals. This sounds like the kind of question where you're more likely to find the answers in formal academia than in general resources.

Try google books. Seriously, that's saved me so many times.

Have you tried Quentin Skinner's The Foundations of Modern Political Thought? It addresses this somewhat.

The "Murderous Machiavel" was a byword for political evil in his day--take a look at the prologue to Marlowe's The Jew of Malta, spoken by Machiavelli's Ghost.

Did you use Google Scholar or just regular Google? Try the former if you haven't, already.

TBQH, I'm getting an impression that OP isn't trying all that hard.
