...That's not what token means at all. A token character, like a "token woman" or "token black" is only there to fill a quota. Black Widow was there because she was involved in the plot.

Her role could've been filled by other characters easily. The writing for her didn't make her absolutely necessary. So she does come off as a token female superhero because we all know Joss Whedon wouldn't want it to be all-male. But she still wasn't nearly as pivotal as the others (though, Hawk-Eye or whatever his name was also kind of replaceable).

If her role could have been filled by another character, let's be honest here: all of their roles could have been filled by other characters. Not a single one of them did something only they could do.

So. It's a bullshit sweeping argument, basically--what are your specific complaints?

"She wasn't nearly as pivotal as others"

Damnnn.... she was vital to many, many plot points, figuring out a whole slew of shit, more than most or all characters. I think I can spot your sexism from here.

Yeah, the token girl in Avengers was Robin. She did nothing except be a woman in a pseudo-militaristic uniform to be a woman in a pseudo-militaristic uniform.
