Yeah, it's messed up.

I disagree with Rosin's thesis though (I have to admit I haven't read it; I'm going off the amazon description and similar stuff I've read). I wouldn't say women are 'ahead.' Girls of a certain economic class are just doing better in school, largely because school punishes anyone who isn't good at sitting still for hours at a time. But women excel in education only to be smacked down by culture. The fact that some female teachers are punishing boys for that culture doesn't mean the culture isn't there. I'm worried that we're just building another feminine mystique based on working hard but not being "bitchy" about it.

I so agree with that. Girls are doing better in school than boys, yes, but once they get into higher education or fields they're still more disadvantaged than boys.

but once they get into higher education

Depends entirely on the discipline. I can say we don't seem to be disadvantaged at all in history, aside from the normal it's-hard-to-have-kids-before-tenure issue. Most humanities seem similar.

(anecdotal evidence) My dad's a professor of computer science, and in his university at least they have basically equal numbers of male and female Ph.D students.

True - but that's only if they *stay* in academia. Once you graduate, even if you're in a field that technically falls under "humaniteies" you can have some serious issues.

Depends on the humanities. Philosophy in particular I've heard horror stories about, at least at the graduate level.
