Hyperbole and a Half

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently a HaaH book came out today. I visited the blog for the first time in about a year, and there was a new (to me) comic about a dinosaur costume when she was 4. I think I must have really lost my taste for it, because I spent pretty much the whole thing going "this is bullshit; this is bullshit; this is bullshit excusing of bad behavior; you were not having these complex philosophical thoughts and FOUR FUCKING YEARS OLD."

I actually feel a little bad hating on it, but...I just really hated it. And I used to love it.

Don't feel too bad. Her comics have dropped in quality slightly since her depression. Understandably, obviously, but I feel sad about it too. Go read about the simple dog and childhood-destroying fish and you'll feel better. :)

...The "childhood-destroying fish" one seriously left me upset for the rest of the day. Even more so when I saw the comments about how hilarious it was. Not universally so, obviously. :/ That was when I realized that I had better just not read it anymore. Sorry to hear it's gotten less funny to those who found it funny, though, since a lot of people I know still seem to have been enjoying it.

da I'm sorry you found it upsetting, that sucks :( I found that one to be so hilarious. The first time I read it I nearly peed my pants. I never thought it could be taken badly, but I guess it is a little... gory for the fish.

Basically I'm an animal lover, and have been since I was a little kid, and that kind of thing really would have traumatized me for life if it had happened to me. I mean, I have NIGHTMARES that play out like that, and I'm in my 30s, and they're the worst, most upsetting nightmares I ever have had. So seeing that something like that had actually happened to someone, as a kid... and then seeing people laugh about it? Panic attacks like whoa.

Honestly I've never really "gotten" the comics and try to avoid them if I can, but having tumblr wax lyrical about how they explain depression exactly just leaves a really bad taste in my mouth and irritates me a lot. idk, glad she's finally getting help tho. i guess.

Totally agree. It's not even so much the comic itself as the attitude that "EVERYONE MUST READ THIS TO UNDERSTAND DEPRESSION!" Er...no.
