That doesn't even look like a word anymore...

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes words start to look funny. I'm working on a fic right now, and "blood" has become that way for me. I just look at it now, and I "hear" blewd, which is hilariously not a word -- or at least, not the word for the red stuff coursing through our bodies.

Any words like that for you guys?

Last night I was delirious or something and I started to think about the word "worm." Like, I pronounce it "werm" or "wirm," do people even pronounce it with a o sound???? Why isn't it spelled "werm?" And now "worm" looks weird to me.

By that logic why isn't work spelled "werk" (at least outside of the internet)?

See, you get it. Why isn't it spelled "werk?"

Because vowel shift + historical spelling. But even knowing the reason doesn't make it any less irritating or make the search for exactly which of ten slightly differently-spelled homophones are the word you actually meant any easier...

I pronounce worm with an O sound, just like I was taught in school... Then again I was taught International English, so my take on all English words and accents is limited, same with work actually.

Or I might be misreading, or something. It is getting late

I've heard the o sound in, hilariously enough, the Opposing Force addon for the original Half-Life.

The letters English uses for vowels make less than zero sense, because a lot of spelling was established before we had a significant pronunciation shift. It also doesn't help that we've got over a dozen vowel sounds, and only 5 letters regularly used to represent them (with two others occasionally used).

I have trouble pronouncing worm. It always comes at as "warm" and my mother makes fun of me.

I just tried pronouncing "worm" with more of an "o" sound and it comes out sounding exactly the way I pronounce "warm." Then I tried pronouncing "warm" more like "arm" but with a "w" at the beginning and that just sounded silly.

Isn't "worm" also historically spelled "wyrm?"

people. every since being taught a mnemonic for how to spell it as a very small child (think: "pe-oh-pl-ee") I cannot help but sound it that way in my head and it just sounds STUPID.

sometimes, fandoms grab onto particular words and use them ALL OVER THE PLACE. once I've noticed it, it's just impossible for me to take them in stride anymore. "gormless" and "gobsmacked" from HP, "invert", "elucidate" and "imbibe" from Holmes, and in trek "indeed", "pod," and "module." all of them just tend to jump completely out of the story, as though somebody were reading it to me absolutely deadpan and then jumped out to triumphantly sing out that one word complete with JAZZHANDS.

with trek, I will never EVER be able to read the word t'hy'la without thinking "TEQUILA!!!!"

Jeez, I still have to sing the alphabet song to myself when I'm filing charts at work. I'm 30.

Slightly off-topic, but I've had a lifelong issue with the word "wound" (injury, not past-tense winding). Just.. the way your mouth shapes the word, and the sound, and gahhhh.

oh my god, on a related note the other day in class there was a poem with the expression "wind the horn" and I swear to god I was THIS close to asking my prof what the hell kind of horn winds up before I realized it was wind as in blow.
Seriously, I was picturing some sort of enormous French horn like contraption with an added crank and a million gears....

Not written, but if i'm sitting around talking with someone and we're saying pretty much any word over and over for some reason, it stops sounding like a word and starts to just sound like noise. It's so weird.

Ha, this is interesting....
