Suddenly sequels

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I just learned yesterday that The Giver, which I read in high school, has sequels. And they're really weird!

Ever been surprised by a sequel?

Just now.

And I guess I'm surprised by some of the Disney sequels...

...And then disappointed.

I LOVE the sequels to The Giver. Gathering Blue is probably my favorite, but they are all pretty good.

But I can't say I have been surprised by the existence of any sequels. I have been surprised by how terrible they are.

Oh I really liked Gathering Blue too.

I found out that the Tripod series had a surprise prequel, does that count?

The Santa Paws series ended up have THIRTEEN books, that kind of blew my mind, and the Cryptid Hunters book has sequel. Year of the Secret Assignments has more than two books, which flabbergasts me.

shut the front door, THIRTEEN Santa Paws books? Good golly.

the one where they crash on the mountaintop was my fave.

I knew about the Giver sequels but I have yet to read them.

I didn't realize The Black Unicorn, which I read about 500 times in middle school, was part of a series. Of course, I have yet to pick up those books too. I should get on that.

Oh, The Black Unicorn from the Magic Kingdom of Landover series? I love those books. Definitely recommend them.

Usually I'm just surprised that they are better than I anticipated.

Blade Runner has sequel novels apparently.

And they're possibly talking about making a second Blade Runner movie. Harrison Ford wants in, apparently.

It does?
That's... not as surprising as I thought it would be. So that's why our class never got those "write what happens after the end" assignments back - they were collected, sent to the author and they picked which version they liked best!

I read one of the sequels without knowing it was a sequel until after I had finished reading it.

I liked it better than The Giver.

As for surprised by one? I was surprised The Fox and the Hound had a midquel. I refuse to see it though.

I was surprised by the Last Unicorn sequel. It was nice, though. I loved that Molly and Schmendrick are still together. Sucks that Lir died, though.

There's a sequel to the Rocky Horror Picture Show, I think it's called Shock Therapy

I found out about it a long time ago, but I wad very surprised to learn that 101 Dalmations (the book) has a sequel... and a very, very weird sequel at that.

Weirdly enough, I read Gathering Blue before I even knew about The Giver. I eventually read The Giver too, but I prefer Gathering Blue. Messenger was alright. I haven't gotten around to Son yet.

I can't think of anything I've had the reverse experience with. Usually, when I had no idea there was a sequel, there was a good reason for that, and I block it out of my memory afterwards.

Yesterday I found out that The Mortal Engines series has prequels.

Apparently they aren't as good.

Birdemic has a sequel. That was surprising.

This is me with the Dealing with Dragons series, with every book after Dealing with Dragons. For some reason, I really think it ended after one book, and I have to be constantly reminded. :/

Secret 2 started off a discussion of the Snow Queen movie, and several people were pissed off that the Little Robber Girl isn't going to be in it.

So this reminded me that Phyllis Ann Karr wrote a fanfic about her--"The Robber Girl"--for one of Jessica Salmonson's Amazons anthologies. And I looked it up and lo and behold, she wrote TWO SEQUELS to it.

I have to find these!

I feel like now I need to hunt the sequels to The Giver. I loved that book as a child.

Most people are always surprised when I tell them there are 13 official Wizard of Oz sequels and Wicked is not one of them.

i like gathering blue because it works fine as a standalone book too.

I guess I'm alone in having deeply disliked Gathering Blue. I didn't even bother with The Messenger.

I dunno if surprised is the right word, but the Dexter books by Jeff Lindsay, that the tv series was based on? One of them, the third or forth (been awhile since I read them) was so out of left field... I like fantasy just fine. I don't like it when it shows up several books into a series that had involved no trace of the supernatural to that point. I heard there was nothing magical in the next book at all, but the author had already lost me; I didn't read it. Seriously, why did he think having Dexter possessed by an ancient demon was in any way a good idea?
