So there's this guy in a football forum that I talk to frequently, we share opinions and sense of humour and it's all good. A few months a go he told me (and the rest of the forum, really, since we can't PM people there) that he's getting married and will be absent from commenting for a while. I congratulated him and hoped to talk to him again.

About a month after that, RL was bogging me down and our team wasn't doing so good, so there are a lot of people in the forum just whining endlessly. It got tiresome for me, so I took a decided to be absent from the place for a while as well.

I came back to commenting and checking up the forum for articles religiously a couple of weeks back. Our team is starting to get on a good stride (as I know they would) and I know there will be less whinging this time. So I came back, snark at opposition clubs, joke around with everybody and this one dude who seemed to share my sense of humour, and whose opinions I seem to agree with a lot.

...and apparently this dude is my now-married friend, I just never knew because when he came back he changed his handle and told people, but I wasn't there. His icon is still the same, but this forum can be pretty heavy to load for my laptop, so I always disallow firefox to show images there, and thus I never realized that he's been using the same icon.

I haven't been treating him as a stranger or anything, when I didn't realise he was my friend, but definitely not in the same kind of familiarity I used to talk to him in his old handle.

I don't know if he noticed that I didn't realise he's him, and I dunno if I should bring it up or not. He won't get mad, I know. It's just that I feel so stupid...

I wouldn't make a big deal about it, but I'd probably add something at the end of a post like "PS: Took me forever to realize this was you, Steve; I must've missed the announcement when you changed your name."
