Well, I think they do have a point. I also kind of agree with the point that there should be more women in fandom. But at this point I'm not going to worry about it and just ship what I want to ship.

There should be more women, and some of them are badly written, but I've noticed that even in the fandoms that have lots of well-written female characters, people will dismiss them as Mary Sues and go on to complain about lack of interesting women and "that's why I ship dudes". But there are PLENTY of wonderful women in fandom.

Also, this argument doesn't hold much water considering how many people shit guys who have shown up on screen for five minutes, who have had zero character development, or are just mentioned in passing, or are terribly written. So I honestly don't buy it at all when people say it's about lack of interesting female characters.
