Sample of named characters in PR: Raleigh Becket, Mako Mori, Newton Geiszler, Herc Hansen, Tendo Choi, Hannibal Chau... Not your typical Jack's and Jill's. I'd say he fits right in -- and still stands out a bit even among such illustrious company, which is perfect for his character.
kamino_neko: Tedd from El Goonish Shive. Drawn by Dan Shive, coloured by Kamino Neko. (Default)

There's no 'John Smith' or local-language equivalent, but there's nothing that rises above 'kind of unusual' - and then, that's only Hannibal, Tendo (both of whom mostly get there due to the mixing of languages, and the fact that one element in each isn't in the character's apparent ethnic background - neither element would stand out on its own) and Herc.

Hannibal Chau, Tendo Choi, and Herc Hansen are just unusual enough for me to make note. None of the others get to that level.

Except for Marshal Stacker Pentecost, which is a show-stopper. Neither Stacker nor Pentecost is a common name in any language. (And Pentecost doesn't get much better paired only with his rank.) The only way that would fit him is if he personally handbuilt the first generation of Jaegers.
