Not a fan of this pairing - but besides the fact that I can't see Zack as much more than a teen crush for Aeris - I think CC and other spinoffs made me resent this pairing more. Mainly because of the characterization new fans often have of Aeris, that the spinoffs tend to support for whatever horrible reason. As you said, the portrayal of Aeris as angelic, sweet and virginal is grossly out of character at best. (Okay, there's no saying if she's a virgin or not, but she certainly doesn't act "virginal" in the real game)

Sorry newfans, but Aeris is a total freak and a troll to boot. I can't see her as anything other than kinky and sexual. Granted, some old fans seemed to see Aeris's pink dress and totally miss the point of her character, but Aeris's character assassination is one of the fandom's worst crimes. Alongside emo Cloud.

+1000000000

Basically all of Compilation feels like anywhere from mediocre to downright bad fanfiction. And I loathe that all of it has completely stripped Aeris of her spunky trolling antics, because that was what made her my favorite character from the original game.

Big fat YES to all of this.

Totally with you on all of this. I'm a big fan of Aeris, and people painting her as this pure virginal flower baffles me beyond belief. This is the Aeris who was super street smart in the shadiest part of town and knew how to get in the good graces with a pimp. This is the same Aeris who persuaded Cloud to crossdress for shits and giggles and made flirtatious comments about it. This is the Aeris who threatened to rip someone's balls off. And I fucking loved Aeris for this.

I remember this one fan posting a fan theory about how Aeris might have been a prostitute, and people got up in arms and violently responded back to it saying Aeris is a "good girl" who would never do such shameful things. (Which is WTF because even if Aeris did that occupation, that doesn't change her character in how she wanted to help people. You can still be a good person while being a prostitute.) It was just weird, because so many people now a days think Aeris wouldn't know a thing about sex, while the original Aeris was completely aware and embraced her sexuality. :/

Now here's the weird thing... I literally just replayed FF7 last month. I didn't remember much of the characterization prior to that, and fanon had colored so much it over the years, so this was pretty much a fresh experience. After finishing the game, here's what became apparent to me.

While Aeris's (damn that spelling is going to stick now) virtuous, Madonna-like depiction is obviously a Compilation-product, these oldfans' claim that she was actually super sexually liberated and kinky were also pretty exaggerated as well. Really, her characterization -- as much as the game could show us -- was somewhere in between. So the weird situation we have is that newfans favor an over-exaggerated characterization from the Compilation, and oldfans favor an over-exaggerated characterization from the original.

The problem is that FF7, while a vast improvement over predecessors, was still VERY limited in what it could convey story-wise. The English translation didn't help, and this becomes extremely obvious during contemporary replays. Seriously, nostalgia aside, that game isn't all that. Add this to the fact that Aeris was simply not in the game for all that long, and you have a lot of projections and interpretations being touted as facts. Sure, she was flirty, she was brass and streetwise, and took great delight in having her macho male friend crossdress, but elevating these broad strokes into kinkiness to the extent that some parts of fandom tend to do? Not exactly as full-proof as one might think if one hadn't replayed the game in a long time.
